utumn
is such a full, rich season. Its beauty comes from its ripeness and maturity.
It is a time of harvest, feasting, celebration, and gratitude for all the
abundance. Yet in the midst of bushels of apples and piles of raked-up,
crunchy leaves there is the deep realization that at the height of fruition
we are also nearing winter. Autumn is the season of letting go, as once
again there will be dormancy. This is the time to put food bydrying,
canning, freezingand prepare for the long, cold nights ahead. |

Autumn
Planting for Spring Bloom
Plant the dutch iris bulbs in the fall in cold climates 3 to 6 inches apart,
with 36 on each side of the allée inside of the bearded iris. In
milder climates, autumn planting will result in winter bloom. |
| The pansies
and English primroses should be planted on each side to fill in open areas.
Plant them over the bulbs in mild-winter areas, providing winter color.
In colder climates, plant them in early spring when the ground thaws. Many
primroses will thrive for years in cool climates, but the pansies will have
to be replaced each year. Remove them when they are finished. |
